Staying Blog Healthy

it has long been my purpose to post 5 or 6 times per week. for a while i was determined to post every single day, but not having regular access to the wide, wide world of web at home makes that, well, pretty unfeasible.
but, it’s true. i do try to post 5 days a week. recently i haven’t been quite at that level and if you’ve noticed, i’m sorry.
what’s interesting to me about blogs is that there are different veins, different species of blogs, which each operate in their own way.
obviously this list is not comprehensive, but i thought i might take a stab at a few observations that i’ve been thinking about. because, in the blog kingdom, there are many species.
one of those blog species is the ‘specialty blog.’ it’s the kind of blog that every article on ‘how to blog better’ tells you to be. they tell you to pick a subject and just post on that. again and again. whether it’s photography or parenting or your affection for license plate frames, the specialty species is a one-topic site.
this blog will never be a specialty blog for a couple reasons. first, i don’t really specialize in anything enough to post on it all the time. second, i like to post nonsensical youtube videos just as much as i like to post ‘serious’ things. that disqualifies me from specialty status.
another blog species is what i guess i’m going to call the ‘personality blog.’ this is the site that is maintained by someone with some level of notoriety. maybe a famous musician. maybe a famous politician. ironically, maybe it’s just a famous blogger. this species of blog is interesting to me because the content rarely matters. whether the posts are long or short, have anything worthwhile to say or not, the blog is supported because the visitors aren’t there to read content, they’re there to hang out with a celebrity (no matter how small or great). and that’s fine. i have a number of personality blogs in my reader. it’s fun. no, i’ll probably never meet 95% of those authors, but it’s entertaining to be able to hear the thoughts that they want to share.
beyond that, you have the ‘friendship blog.’ yes, of course you know what this species is all about…you’re friends with the author and thus they will never leave your google reader account. they may post often, they may post once a year, but it’s there and we will continue to watch and wait and enjoy the posts at whatever frequency they appear.
i love friendship blogs. they span the scale of topics and frequencies and styles.
and, when i think about it, i’m happy to be a friendship blog. i’m glad that i can get on here and blather on about whatever it is i happen to be posting about and know that some of my friends from different parts of the state and country are checking in from time to time.
and that’s why i try to post 5 times a week.
so, if you’re reading this, thanks. and if you come back to read again, thanks again. leave your URL in the comments so i can check you out as well.
blessings and maranatha.
