Gear Woes
Posted in moments in ministry, music, nonsense on October 24th, 2008 by genepensiero – 1 Commenton wednesday night i was slated to play electric guitar for our evening service.
sadly, i am still so seldom an e-guitarist that my ‘rig’ currently consists of a podXT pro.
while that may seem, to some of you, a really fun thing (and it can be), it is certainly not a ‘legitimate’ rig for any self-respecting guitar player.
i try to be self-respecting, but, hey, you do what you have to do.
so, during the sound check i noticed that my shortboard (the fancy thingy that controls the pod, giving me access to the tones i had worked on that afternoon) was WIGGING OUT. any time i would go to patch B the thing would flash and flicker and then die. then a few seconds later it would come back on. then the process would repeat.
while part of me was annoyed, another part was sad. this would mean i’d have to manually switch tones…with my hands….tacky. tacky and lame.
however, yet another part of me was secretly happy. serves you right line 6. it was only a small part. i still love the pod…i just don’t respect it.
so, service began. call to worship went fine except that i was distracted by not having the shortboard.
then, when we went up for our set (which is at the end on wednesday nights), i hit the Tuner button and the whole pod went blank. blank, not dark.
see, the two little LEDs were still lit up. i switched on and off…a bunch of times…hit some buttons…then, realizing that the pod had defeated me, i placed my Gibson on its stand and walked off the stage.
as i sang i realized that the pod had not only taken my ability to play, but my dignity as well.
then the service ended and the house and stage lights (which were dimmed) came up to full power.
and the pod kicked on in full force.
the stage uplights are on a dimmer pack. dim lights mean less power is going to them.
next time, gene, don’t plug your ‘rig’ onto the same circuit that is used to dim the lights on the stage.
next time…

even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the Church that you seek to excel.
