Positive Post Tuesday, or, Would You Like Some Free Music?

music is a valuable thing.

recently musicians like british uberstars Radiohead and Coldplay have made waves by giving away their music without demanding £8 from your wallet.

(oh, for you who don’t know the £ conversion, that’s about 10 euros…)

this practice isn’t too common yet, at least not for established musicians, however, the trend is slowly spreading as artists and bands reach into the fan-pool of the wide, wide world of web.

i love when folks give their music away for free, especially Christian musicians. even if they are only demos or rough cuts of songs, it’s nice to be given a song in its entirety, not just a 30 second splice to listen to.

i love it because music is a valuable thing, and, in the case of the Christian musician, even if i don’t love the song, at least i’ve heard something new, and, at least i have been exposed to a few more minutes of someone worshiping the Lord.

this week i discovered a few musicians through blogs and things…some less produced than others, but all new to me. i happily listened. i might not become a faithful fan of these folks, but i did appreciate that they were willing to share their music with me freely.

in fact, i appreciate it a lot. way to go guys. thanks for giving something away.

here’s who i heard in the last few days:

jonathan paul gives us a few piano demos. i recommend ‘glorify’ and look forward to more in the future.

tom read averages 6 minutes per song. i listened to ‘desperation song.’

jon bauer has some free songs. they’re just a little hard to find. but, find we did, here and here and here.

joel and luke have a famous sister, but you wouldn’t really know it. i enjoyed listening on their myspace page (i know that doesn’t really qualify as ‘giving music away,’ but they do let you listen to 5/6 of their EP as often as you like.) ’something’s gotta give’ is my track of choice.

there are lots of people like these guys out there. i only know about a few of them, so if you know of other people who want to share their music, let me know, then we can applaud them together.

in the same vein, i have 2 other news items of note:

first, this guy is going to release the audio (and video i think…) of a show he recently performed in portland. make sure you check his blog regularly so you can pick up this pretty unprecedented gift from an international touring musician.

second, this guy has added a music page to his blog. go listen. and then bombard him with comments telling him how you want him to post the mp3s of the demo he recorded with the rock band he was in during high school.

blessings
